Personality and History
Ahrien was one of a very few firemakers in the original tribe led by Meiron and Tyaar; her brother Byern shared the Talent but to a much lesser degree. Ahrien was a shy, sweet-natured person who never lost her temper or even raised her voice. Her lifemating with Helkar was low-key but they loved each other deeply. He was lost at the Sundering when the younger of their sons, Jheredd, was a small child. (Unknown to Ahrien, Helkar had just Recognized Adiana, who drowned him in order to prevent him from revealing her true nature, which he had learned upon their Recognition.) In reaction to this Ahrien became a somewhat overprotective mother. She also never took another permanent mate, though Byern, Crystel, and other friends steered many a male her way, trying to find "just the right guy" for her.
Ahrien loved the dance and was friends with many members of the troupe, but could never bring herself to perform in front of others; the closest she ever came was court dancing. Instead she cheerfully helped out backstage, sewing costumes, building sets, or whatever--no task too menial or grimy!--and handled the lighting for performances, proud of her skill in manipulating flame for lighting effects.
Not long after Wisprian's death and Tascha's flight, a tribe of Outsider humans, horse-riding nomads, attacked the Mraal. Elves and Mraal joined forces to repel the invaders. Ahrien was working with some of the healers in an aid station when their party was attacked. In her extremity, and after seeing her dear friend Meroe killed before her eyes, Ahrien went berserk and used her Talent to immolate the attackers. Afterwards, horrified by what she had done, she begged Lord Tyaar to help her find a way to ensure that such a thing would never happen again. A bit taken aback himself by her display of raw power, Tyaar was more than happy to oblige. He took advantage of Ahrien's upset mental state to persuade her to become a Functional firemaker. Known as "Flame," she was stationed in the Feast Hall, where she controlled the lighting both for day-to-day use of the hall and for theatrical performances there.
After the restoration of the Functionals following Tyaar's death, Ahrien was extremely bitter at the way the Tower elves had used her (especially Jheredd). With a number of other ex-Functionals, she spent several eights of years at New Hope to distance herself from bad memories. After Wyn was killed by a sea monster, Ahrien lifemated with Havrin and the two of them, along with a number of other Tower elves who had decided life Outside was not what it was cracked up to be, returned to the Tower. In 4th millennium, Ahrien is far more aggressive and outspoken than she used to be, and far less shy about using her talent offensively.Humans: After some initial timidity, Ahrien grew to like the Mraal because the ones she encountered were so sweet and helpful. In their turn they regarded her with awe and reverence because of her firemaking ability; she was an elemental goddess to them and also the patroness of potters. After the incident in the battle and her subsequent Functionality, Ahrien/Flame took on some 'destroyer' aspects in the minds of the humans. The third-mil Mraal title for her is "His Wrath."
Trolls: Was a little apprehensive of them, but knew Byern was fond of them and tolerated them for his sake.
Preservers: Liked them (before they were all lost at the Sundering) but found them confusing.
