NEW HOPE EYRIES

The eyries in New Hope are located in the cliffs, a mile or two inland from the beach.  The cliffs are 200-300 feet tall, and the hawks' mews are located near the summit.  A number of store-rooms, training, and meeting rooms are shaped and/or tunnelled into the cliffs below the mews.  The eyries have four main levels.

Ground Level

The lowest level,  at the base of the cliffs, contains a large public training area, outfitted with weapons racks, mats, etc.  This is where much of the hand-to-hand and gliding combat training is done.   This is the largest single room in the eyrie complex, featuring a very high (40-50 ft) ceiling.  The main entrance to the eyrie is in the east wall of this room, along with several large, clearstone-covered windows.  At the rear of the training hall, two doors lead into two smaller chambers.  One is used for storage, and one is available for smaller, more private training sessions.

The stairway to the upper levels is on the south side of the training hall.  The stairwell makes four spirals on its way tothe top of the cliffs.  There is an exit and a balcony at each point where the stairs intersect the eastern, outside wall.  There are block and tackles on each balcony to facilitate raising and lowering heavy objects to the mews.

Second Level

This level contains one large and several small meeting rooms.  They are used for lectures, patrol assignments, strategy sessions, etc.  There is a balcony on the east end of the largest meeting room, which is usually screened off by heavy hangings, to allow glider access from outside.

Third Level

There is nothing on this level but a small wardroom/lookout post.

Fourth Level

This level contains several small rooms which serve as storage and tack repair rooms for the mews above.

Mews

This level contains the hawks' stalls and perches, a tack room, an "infirmary stall", a nesting stall, and the rendering room (where kills are processed).  There is a cistern for watering the hawks here.  It is fed by seep springs in the cliff which have been channeled by rockshapers.
