With no other Talent than Sending and so different in appearance and temperment from her siblings, Ilayo often found it difficult growing up in a talented, competitive family. She discovered her place in the family when her own unique skills with people came into their own. Ilayo is the mediator, the harmonizer, the one that keeps the strong, often conflicting, personalities in balance (which earned her her Call Name from her brother, Hansho). She mediates the political debates between Uko and Oshi. She gets Moki and Onay to pull out of themselves, gets Onay to smile. She even gets Shiko to participate in the family and soothes over the resulting tension. She’s also the one who eventually mediated the healing of the breach between Servan and Uko after Sunbreath’s death. Ilayo has true understanding of all her family, accepts them for who they are and can express that understanding to each of them. Her main method of pursuing her role as the family glue is by organizing family gatherings, usually meals, that bring them together from their far flung interests and obligations at regular intervals.
