Other info: Jauren is a scientist of sorts, though magic and keen observation, and a highly inquisitive mind were his tools rather than instrumentation and clinical analysis. He is a geneticist, primarily interested in the study of how various species adapt to their environments. Not coldly clinical in his studies, his interest extends into anthropology and the study of the social aspects of more sentient beings.
He was primarily considered a flesh shaper aboard the Shell. There
was little use for a healer and his talent functioned to reshape star travelers
whose talents did not extend to self-shaping, in order to explore different
worlds. Jauren was instrumental in deciding which form to take for
each world. Generally they took the form of the reigning sentient
beings
as their disguises. Jauren greatly enjoyed these explorations
since they were more physically immediate than any out of body experience
could be.
Like all the Firstcomers, Jauren was much affected by the World of Two Moons' inhibiting effect upon his talents. "Going out", an ability which generally required more effort than his other talents, was totally lost to him. Likewise his flesh/self-shaping abilities. The latter was retained somewhat within his healing talent since healing was simply another aspect of shaping, but he was never able to totally reconstruct a body again.
Though his magic was severely crippled, through effort, practice and determination, Jauren retrained his healing talent to work within the aether of the WOTM and regained approximately 70% of his former power. Healing took more effort than previously and difficult healings tired him, but he was still a stronger, more skilled healer than any of the Firstcomers' descendants. His sending was average for a Firstcomer, but again beyond the abilities of his descendants. His mind was casually open when sending, and contained layers of thought and experience in the images behind the 'words'.
Jauren's natural scientific curiosity had him almost immediately studying
their new, inescapable world. It being too dangerous to study the
humans who they had originally shaped their bodies to influence, he studied
the behavior of the animal life. The necessity of hunting was the
first thing impressed upon him. Realizing that the taking of a life
was an anathema to
his people (even to himself), it took awhile to accept the need even
as he practiced the skill. Fortunately others recognized this need
also, and reinforced each other. It was sheer grit-your-teeth-and-do-it-ness
that taught him to hunt. Though he was never one of the tribe's best,
and though he never learned to like it, he became an adequate hunter and
provider.
When the Firstcomers first decided to split up in an attempt to preserve their race, it was also decided to divide the healers as equably as possible. Jauren decided to go with Ketsal's group along with Isilien, another healer.
His studies of the native fauna continued, leading him to be first to rediscover joining. He had some trouble finding a partner to experiment with him. The pastime was not useful and few saw any reason to explore the range of their new bodies which were giving them so much trouble. Eventually Jauren realized joining had soothing, restive qualities that their stressed bodies were badly in need of.
Once the birth of Isilien's children (and a few offspring of his own) assured that the group of elves would not lack for healers, Jauren set out to find out if any of the other firstcomer groups had survived. He left Ketsal's band shortly after the founding of what became the Old Settlement. After many years of fruitless searching, he finally discovered a group of wolfrider elves living on the tundra far to the north and west, and settled with them.
The White Wolf Riders had gained their wolf blood and the resultant keen senses through the efforts a firstcomer who had managed to retain or regain their self-shaping talent. Though Jauren regretted the blood mingling, he saw the immediate benefits gained. The wolf-blooded elves were only two generations along and though somewhat distrustful of Jauren because he was a stranger and because of his height, he was, after all, one of their own kind and they desperately needed a tribal healer. They called him a High One, which amused him no end, relieved him of the necessity of hunting, and accepted them into their tribe.
The wolfen aspects of the elves fascinated him and he spent much time surreptitiously or boldly studying them and their developing culture. He took lovemates among them and eventually Recognized a particularly feral maiden. With great effort, he tapped his remnant of shaping ability in an attempt to influence the child's genes. He did manage to pass on his healing talent to his resultant son. Jauren sired two other children before he finally left the White Wolf Riders.
Jauren left the wolfriders eventually and ran across the New Hope settlement and was recognized by his son, Khepri, and granddaughter, Wyn. Since New Hope had three perfectly adequate healers, Jauren saw no reason to constantly hang around and be "on call". Especially since he feels he has experienced quite enough vicarious pain in his lifetime, thank you. He will help with a healing if asked, but the hard part is locating him. He considers neither New Hope nor Tower Mountain a permanent home, but spends more time at the Tower in his last years teaching his lovemate Pheylan the arts of healing. He enjoys the unaccustomed luxuries of Tower, but as a cave it's "over-explored". His main interest in Tower is scaling its sides. "It's a serious challenge!" The humans make him nervous and he can't believe the Tower elves actually trust them not to turn on them.
Jauren Recognizes Davrille in TWR 1227 but the two of them do not lifemate. He dies in TWR 1230 in a fall while rockclimbing on the Tower's walls.
