New Hope Mini Character Guide--Humans

(Updated 08/00)

This condensed version of the New Hope Character Guide gives a brief description of many of the important human characters in New Hope during the first four centuries of the Fourth Millennium.  This list covers some but by no means all of the human characters--there are hundreds of them, so don't be shy about making up new ones if you need a character for a story.  However, if you want to use an established character, here they are.  Many of them are wide open for further development.  The characters are listed by Household, and are arranged more or less chronologically.

The New Hope Mini Character Guide is copyright 2000 by Hydra's-Head Press.  Permission is hereby granted to make copies of this document in any medium for the use of current contributing members of Tower Mountain/New Hope.

Founding families:

Anath: F, H - Black, E - Brown.  B NH -31, d. NH 49.  Sister of Kel, mate of Tokek (d), mother of Troneh and Dunoe (remained in the Redrock Valley.)  Acerbic, intelligent.  Not a member of the Lovebringer cult, but came with Kel because neither of her sons were willing to take her into their families when her husband died.

Avir: F, H - black, E - Brown.  B. NH -36, d. NH 18.  Mate of Shenno, mother of Rillin and Ryin.  Eyrie worker.

Feren: M, H - Dark brown, E- hazel.  B. NH -24, d. NH 60.  Mate of Meleny, father of Tuko, Foreth, Ravoyen, and Shulen.  Eyrie worker, austringer; Rahirah's chief assistant.  Stolid, cheerful, dependable.  Not a member of the Lovebringer cult; never really got over hoping that someday the spirits would announce that all this equality business was a joke and things could go back to normal now.

Ilare: F, H - auburn, E - brown.  B. NH -18, d. NH 53.  Mate of Jekaret.  Eyrie worker.

Jekeret: M, H - dark brown, E - grey.  B. NH -20, d. NH 66.  Mate of Ilare. Eyrie worker.

Kel: Household Elder, NH 0-28.  M, H - dark brown, E - hazel.  Son of Ressha and Marl (D), b. NH -28, d. NH ; mate of Tekka, father of Minath, Rahee, Tirro, Tirth, and Bikka.  Herdsman (goats), excellent carder and spinner.  Closet theologian.  Known to most as a very competent producer of thread and yarn.  Easygoing, fond of children, can often be found telling them fantastic tales while teaching them to spin.  Extremely intelligent, with a strong imagination and great intellectual curiosity.  A near-brilliant philosopher/theologian.  In the Redrock Valley, had privately developed the theory that the Lovebringer was not a spirit (elf) at all, but rather a being of pure spirit (soul); was mightily peeved when Piet showed up and ruined a perfectly good theory.  Not  overly serious in everyday life and delights in teasing his wife; seldom gets so caught up in his world of Ideal Forms that he forgets the pleasures of real life.  D. NH 28. Clearance:  Barbara Cummings

Meleny: F, H - light brown, E - Brown.  B. NH -22, d. NH 13.  Mate of Feren. Mother of Tuko, Foreth, Ravoyen, and Shulen.  Eyrie worker.  Dies in childbirth.

Minath:   F, H - dark brown, E - dark brown.  Daughter of Tekka and  Kel, b. NH -13, d. NH 81; sister of Rahee, Tirro, Tirth, and Bikka; mate of Ketan, mother of Pita and Arrek.  Spinner, seamstress.  Very pretty and knows it.  A consummate flirt, fond of showing herself off.  Essentially kindhearted and concerned for others, but this often takes the form of bossiness or nosiness -- all “for your own good,” of course!  Likes taking charge and the attention that leadership brings, and actually is a very good organizer.  Has a definite artistic streak and excellent taste.  A trifle more concerned with status and appearance than she should be. Clearance:  Barbara Cummings

Rahee:   F, H - dark brown, E - green/hazel.  Daughter of Tekka and Kel,  b. NH -9, d. NH 52; sister of Minath, Tirro, Tirth, and Bikka.  Very small and slight.  Fascinated  by the great hawks since childhood, destined to be New Hope's first human hawkrider.  Proud, serious, reserved, her moments of merriment cherished all  the more for their rarity.  Takes her job very seriously.  Uninterested in romance.  She never marries or has any children, though she gets on well with her various nieces and nephews. Dies in a clash with a Stinker raiding party.  Clearance:  Barbara Cummings

Shenno: M, H - Red, E - brown.  B. NH -38, d. NH 44.  Mate of Avir, father of Rillin and Ryin.  Builder and architect, stonemason.  Intelligent but generally distracted save in his work.  Careful, competent craftsman.  Delighted by trolls, who provided him with some of the practical knowledge he was missing, and gets along well with them.

Tawna:   F, H - dark brown/grey, E - dark brown.  B. NH -46, D. NH 11.  Mate of  Surath, mother of Ketan.  Herbalist, midwife, has some very basic surgical  knowledge.  Archetypical “wise woman,” much sought after for her knowledge of  childbirth and medical skills.  Perpetually amused by the world, and it takes  a lot to win her respect.  Nonviolence is all very well, but if someone hits  her she has a tendency to hit back; to her mind, defending one's own is part  of the natural way of things.  Always one to speak her mind, especially as she  gets older, and will sometimes make outrageous statements just to stir things  up.  An excellent dancer in her youth and still enjoys festivals where she can exercise this skill. Clearance:  Barbara Cummings

Tekka: Household elder NH 0-34.  F, H - dark brown, E - brown.  Daughter of Tootha and Verro  (both D), b. NH -30 D. NH 34. ; mate of Kel, mother of Minath, Rahee, Tirro, Tirth, and  Bikka.  Seamstress, clothing designer, embroiderer; has general homemaking and  child raising skills.  A serene, confident, capable woman, able to carry out  tasks in the middle of any sort of chaos.  Has little imagination and little  inclination to believe rumors or spread them.  Reserves judgment on things of  which she has no personal knowledge, but accepts new information willingly and without bother.  Not one for coming up with new ideas or plans, but is excellent at organizing things and making use of existing resources.  Can be counted on to calm things down and keep them calm. Clearance:  Barbara Cummings

Tirro:   M, H - light brown, E - dark brown.  Son of Tekka and Kel, b. NH -11, d. NH 83; brother of Minath, Rahee, Tirth, and Bikka.  Even tempered, reliable, quite bright.  Has a strong sense of fairness and is often called on by his peers to referee squabbles.  He tends to get responsibilities heaped on him, and seldom complains, though he occasionally wishes he had a little more time to himself.  A trader and traveler in his youth; eventually marries an Exotic Beauty from a tribe south of Great Water and brings her home.  Takes over his mother's job as household coordinator when she gets on in years.  Clearance:  Barbara Cummings

Tirth:   M, H - dark brown, E - dark brown.  Son of Tekka and Kel, b. NH  -6; brother of Minath, Rahee, Tirro, and Bikka.

Arrek: M, b. NH 12, d. NH 92.  Son of Minath and Ketan.  Woodcarver and leathercarver; known for carving humorous caricatures of his house and tribesmates (which, for some unknown reason, became very popular objets d'art in a couple of the troll kingdoms...)

H - brown, E - brown.  Daughter of Girand and Olwah.  Harnessmaker; runs the harnessmaking shop during the many occasions that Rahirah can’t.  Inclined to give everyone the benefit of the doubt; though she runs the shop very tightly, is rather dithery in her private life.  In later life, a household and Council Elder; known for being able to prolong just about any argument by bringing up yet another unconsidered side of the question and worrying it into the ground, despite the fact that she professes to hate arguing.

Circa NH 140:

Alhanya: F, H - dark brown, E - brown.  b.  NH 81.  Grandmother of Millya, sister of Eyra.  One of Trailingstar's household elders.  A short, plump, motherly woman; adores gossip and can talk the hind leg off a mule.  Strong-minded and while invariably pleasent, usually ends up getting her way. Intelligent and perceptive, but more interested in practical knowlege than than theory, though capable of theorizing at need.  Has a philosophical bent but thinks philosophy exists to serve people and not the other way around.  He reads people well.  Can irritate those close to him with his seeming distance; his passion manifests as determination in pursuit rather than emotional explosions.  Losing the use of his hands in the last ten years or so of his life turns him rather bitter.  In his last few years he suffers several minor strokes and is forgetful and often ill.  Clearance: Barb Cummings

NH 11.  Warrior of the Golden  Torc; drummer.  A third-generation Torc, his occupational priority is the  protection of Leravie (at least nominally).  He and Jehne are a single working  unit and have a close rapport with each other.  Alano is the more practical,  with a talent for seeing the overall picture.  Quick to sense being  manipulated, sidetracked, etc.  Analytical by nature, has considerable stamina  and tenacity.  Will always look for another option rather than admit defeat.   Protective by nature, somewhat reserved.  Often has to be made to relax.

NH 36; sister of Tesho Stick.  Close friend of Neenah  Fire.  Good at sealore and boating, fishing, swimming and diving.  Also an  apprentice weaver and a decent cook.  Sings in the Choral Society, enjoys  dancing and plays a mean drum.  Usually has at least one pet.  A merry,  laughing girl with an impish streak; likes to get in on others' schemes.  An  inveterate romantic, enjoys matchmaking.  Curious about new people and has a  fine, active imagination; treats life as a marvelous adventure. Clearance:  Margaret Dean

Ax III (given name Quatoya):   F, H - black with a silver streak, E -  grey.  Daughter of Ax II (D), b. Chief cook of Greenwillow Household, with a “down-home”  style; nothing fancy, just good food well prepared.  A grumpy, easily  irritated woman, not precisely happy with her life, but content that she has  found something useful to do.  Firmly believes that elves are gods despite  their protestations to the contrary.  D. NH 36.

Dubyk: M, first husband of Trika.  Torc warrior assigned by Shadaln to protect her daughter Leravie in the wilds of New Hope.

Duele Stick:   F, H - medium/deep brown, E - brown.  B. Clearance:  Ree Moorhead Pruehs

Epel: M. H - dark brown, E - grey.  Father of Schim.  Torc warrior assigned by Shadaln to protect Leravie.  Did his duty with grim determination, though he sometimes secretly felt resentment that His Voice had exiled him into the wilderness with all those crazy Lovebringer people.  Held himself aloof from the other humans in New Hope for quite awhile before loneliness finally broke down his resistance. Married extremely late in life; no one was more surprised than he when his wife turned up pregnant.  Trained his son Schim to follow in his footsteps taking care of His Voice's daughter, though unlike Dubyk, he did not send his son back to the Redrock Valley for training.

Jehne:   M, H - mid- to dark brown w/gold highlights, E - gold-flecked  brown.  Son of Trika and Dubyk, brother of Alano and Terren (among others), b.  NH 13.  Warrior of the Golden Torc; firedancer (juggling firebrands and  knives), enjoys juggling and dancing in general.  A third-generation Torc and  the youngest ever so named; assigned to Leravie along with his brother.  He  and Alano customarily fight as a team.  Jehne is quick, agile, and hard to  anticipate.  He is an intuitive fighter, anticipating both his enemy's moves  and his partner's.  Cheerful and playful, almost bouncy; has a whimsical sense  of humor and a mischievous streak.  When he's on the job, he's on the job;  when he's off, he's off (though always ready for anything).

NH 15.  Mate of Tawno Rock,  mother of Tulera and Eden, among others.  General domestic skills, especially  those having to do with cleanliness and order.  Paramed/first aider/ nurse  (studied under Dove).  Cards, spins, and is an excellent seamstress.  Does  embroidery and sings in the Choral Society; enjoys group dancing.  Calm,  patient, no-nonsense compassionate, good at remembering procedures and with a  minor obsession with cleanliness.  Doesn't panic in a crisis as long as there  is something definite to do about it.  Not imaginative, creative or intuitive,  but has an exact, precise memory.  Quietly but firmly devoted to the ideals  and beliefs of New Hope, to Tawno and their family.  Respectful of authority  but will not hesitate to dissent or correct when she feels it necessary. Clearance:  Margaret Dean

Stick VII (birthname Peranne):   F, H - sandy brown, E - blue.  Daughter  of Stick VI (Byrah) and Matu, b. Clearance:  Margaret Dean

Temek: M.  Young man killed by Nennali in NH 7.

Terren:   M, H - grey/black, E - black.  Son of Trika and Dubyk, b. Trika:    F, H - black going to grey, E - brown.  Daughter of Gael (of  the Golden Torc) and Nye (of the Weaver's service), b. NH -13.  Household  Elder from NH 10 - NH 65.  Has outlived three husbands as of NH 50 (Ariit,  Dubyk, and Barac Stick), but is still a merry widow.  Chatelaine of  Greenwillow Household; has a wide variety of household management skills, but  spends far more time teaching and supervising than doing the physical work.   Runs Greenwillow with an iron fist in a silken glove (occasionally an iron  glove).  Weaving is a relaxation, and she will continue weaving till the end  of her life.  Practical, a hard worker.  Dedicated to her Household and the  dream of New Hope.  A woman of strong moral principles and values.  A  perfectionist, orderly, an excellent organizer.  Thrifty, careful, and  cautious, with a tendency toward “packrat” behavior.  Reserved; prefers to  react coolly and does not find it easy to express deep feeling aloud.  A great  wife, a wonderful mother, and a good friend.  D.
