New Hope and Tower Mountain dates always end with the same digit. NH 0 = TWR 1180; NH 50 = TWR 1230. NH 0 also corresponds with GW 70 and NH 50 with GW 120.
Locations other than New Hope: GW = Great Water Holt; HV = Hidden Valley; LO = Lone Oak; ST = nomadic location of the Stinkers; TM = Tower Mountain/Redrock Valley; TwN = location of the Tribe without Name; WG = Wolfgang
Seasons:
(winter), Moons 1 - 6Years begin on the winter solstice ("Year's Birth").
(spring), Moons 7 - 12
(summer), Moons 13 - 18
(autumn), Moons 19 - 24
| NH ?-- | ("Ten to fifteen human generations ago") (ST) The Stinkers arrive in the area of Never-Winter Holt and begin randomly terrorizing the elves they find there. The elves, learning about the Stinkers' healthy respect for water, are able to use it to their advantage. |
| NH -13 -- | (TM) Birth of Trika to Gael of the Golden Torc and Nye of the Weaver's Service. |
| NH -8-- | (GW) An unusually concentrated effort by the Stinkers overwhelms the NeverWinter elves, who flee south. Eventually the NeverWinter elves encounter and (for mutual protection) band with the elves of Great Water. |
| NH -6 -- | (GW/TwN) Seahawk befriends Stick IV of the Tribe without Name (Betrayal, GW supplement -- R. Pruehs) |
| NH -4 -- | (GW/TwN) After the Stinkers finish decimating the former
NeverWinter area, they move southwest and have their first altercation
(mostly over territory) with the Tribe without Name. With the help of their
elfin allies from Great Water, the Tribe drive the Stinkers into a particularly
nasty area called the Mist Marsh by the elves, the Land of Mists by the
TwN. (Dissonance, unpublished GW novel -- R. Pruehs)
(ls, GW/TwN) Mayrah and Mawna, aka Flotsam and Jetsam -- soulsisters who are elf and human, respectively -- join the Tribe without Name. ("In All But Blood," QUESTINGS #2 [GW bigzine] -- M. [Purdy] Dean) |
| NH -3 -- | (GW/TwN/ST) The Stinkers get lucky and find an exit out
of the Mist Marsh. The intervening time has made them lean, mean, and looking
for vengeance. Most of the elders and children are now dead, killed by
the creatures that inhabit the Marsh. By happenstance the Stinkers run
headlong into the Worshippers of the Sky-Home, who have been lukewarmly
but persistently on the trail of "a whole buncha demons" (the elves of
the Island Clans) for the past several years, ever since a debacle which
led to the death of the Worshippers' powerful priestess/leader. The two
groups decide to join forces and annihilate their foes.
(Moon 20) The Stinker/Sky-Home Worshippers' use of unanticipated strategies, combined with their newfound numerical advantage, nearly leads to the defeat of the GW/TwN allied forces. (Era's End, unpublished GW novel -- R. Pruehs) The tide is turned by the arrival of elfin reinforcements, the use of guerrilla warfare and a few unorthodox battle practices. The Stinkers (and allies) are driven deeply into the Mist Marsh. |
| NH -2 -- | Trika is accepted into Tower service in the same year that Ariit of the Young Scout's service is promoted to the Golden Torc. Later in the year the unexpected death of one of Peysol's servants leads Shadaln to place Trika in Peysol's service. (TwN) Mawna marries Branch (III), son of Stick IV. |
| NH -1 -- | At some point during the Crisis Ariit and Trika meet and fall headlong in love. When plans are first being made for New Hope, Trika and Ariit waste little time deciding that the Honored Ones can't survive without them, and volunteer to go. (TwN) Birth of Byrah, a daughter, to Mawna and Branch. |
| NH 0 -- | (Spring) Founding of New Hope. For the first year, the colony
subsists largely on supplies brought with them from the Tower as they concentrate
on finding/making shelters, clearing fields for planting, and exploring
their immediate surroundings.
(Fall) Mischa born to Shadow-Wise and Mikail. (WG) Stillmorn born to Coolbreath and Nalkor. (GW) Sunhawk born to Tinker and (presumably) Seahawk. Iys bonds with the fledgling Wishes; Evanda bonds with Rheyau. Tekka, Kel, and assorted relatives build the main rooms of what will be Trailingstar Household. Rahirah and the other elves later involved in the Household hang out there a good deal and helps in the building, but there is no formal household organization. Though Rahirah (and probably the other elves later involved in the Household) hangs out there a good deal and helps in the building, there is no formal organization. Rahirah's main work during this time is supervising the shaping of the New Hope eyries and helping the new and inexperienced hawkriders learn how to live with and care for their bondbirds. There are some minor interpersonal conflicts between Tower and Outsider elves. ("Once More, With Feeling" -- B. Cummings) Bugdance and Heartseeker decide that if Piet and Rahirah are ever going to end up in each others' arms someone is going to have to throw them there. They appoint themselves the throwers. Tanyel comes to New Hope to wait for the birth of his child and enters in on the plot. |
| NH 1 -- | (Winter) Snowflower born to Dove and Piet. Raventongue is
the child's adoptive father. Rahirah has mixed feelings. ("Not Always to
the Swift" -- B. Cummings) Jiko born to Crystel (sire not known)
(Spring) Frodis born to Rahirah and Tanyel. Rahirah and Piet lovemate ("One Elf Shy" -- B. Cummings). With the birth of Frodis, Tekka convinces Rahirah that it would be a good idea for her to move out of her small room in the eyrie and into the house. Piet moves in shortly thereafter, soulbrothers in tow. (Untitled story in progress, B. Cummings) Tekka and Kel chosen as the human, and Rahirah and Piet chosen as the elven representatives to the Council of Elders. ("Unity of Heart, Part I -- For Better" -- B. Cummings) (Summer) Peysol and Seahawk visit Great Water Holt to discuss trade possibilities. While there, Peysol has a conversation with Halfmoon about Dove. ("A Cup of Cold Water" -- M. Dean) While Peysol is away, Leravie Recognizes a wandering Outsider, Starblade. On his return, Peysol is forced to Challenge the Outsider for Leravie. Leravie is tempted to become Starblade's lifemate, but eventually decides the life of a barbarian's mate is not for her. In the wake of several personal changes, she and Peysol lifemate and soulbond. (Projected story, "Nor the Contest to the Strong"-- V. Bowe and M. Dean) Rahirah plans to take Frodis to the Tower to show her to her family there, and resolves some lingering worries about her relationship to Piet. ("What Dreams May Come" -- B. Cummings) |
| NH 2 -- | (Winter) New Hope has a difficult winter, as the Tower supplies
are pretty much exhausted and the colony must subsist on what they have
been able to grow (or otherwise accumulate) in the previous year. However,
they scrape by without having to appeal to the Tower for help.
(Spring) Minath, Tekka's eldest daughter, marries. Nalkor and Rahirah begin the hawkback messenger service. (Summer) Kiriel and Frith return to Tower Mountain, being unable to face another summer full of spiders (Kiriel) and rampant allergies (Frith). |
| NH 3 -- | Birth of Donn to Roo and Terel. Merek, Nennali, and their daughter Lorelee first arrive at New Hope. (Story in progress, "Port of Call" -- D. Beaver) Mijo and Lorelee become friends and lovemates. (Story in progress, "The Oldest Game, Explained" -- D. Beaver) Over the next few years the Voyager, Merek's ship, makes fairly frequent visits. Birth of Nineki to Leravie; Peysol is adoptive father. |
| NH 4 -- | Rahirah makes arrangements with Tanyel to bring a few young,
unbonded hawks to New Hope for breeding stock.
Soon after New Hope gets actual beds, Peysol catches Trika making his and Leravie's. He convinces her that this is Not A Good Thing. ("The Bedmaking," Tales #27 -- M. Dean) (Moon 10) Death of Ariit in a hunting accident. (Moon 22) Trika is courted by Dubyk, Ariit's partner in the Torcs and himself a widower with a daughter and a son. They marry. |
| NH 5 -- | Ceyte, conveyed by Tanyel who also drops off the four new
hawks, visits New Hope for a full turn of the seasons; she returns to Tower
Mountain bursting with creative energy.
Dusk, dissatisfied with the changes at Great Water & exceedingly restless, goes to visit her friends at New Hope, hoping a change of scene might help her settle down. She bonds with one of the new hawks, and asks permission to stay. She is adopted into Whistleleaf Household and begins hawkrider training. Pita born to Minath. Around this time the Council is formed and the earliest Households formally established. (Households have been sending representatives to meetings for some years, but the formal rules of selecting Elders and the Council's operation are hammered out at this time.) Trika begins whipping Greenwillow into shape. (Fall, TwN) Death of Stick IV, chief of the Tribe without Name, of injuries sustained in a hunting accident; Seahawk barely arrives in time to say goodbye. The elf promises his dying friend that he will "always look after the Tribe and have a care to its safety." He begins irregular, semiannual visits to the Tribe. Branch becomes Stick V. Birth of Barana, a daughter, to Mawna and Stick V. |
| NH 6 -- | Jand comes to New Hope, after a failed assassination attempt
reveals his suicidal tendencies. Dove begins trying to heal his mind. ("So
Much Is Gone, and Little Is New" -- G. Breshears) He is initially housed
at Greenwillow Household, then moved to Whistleleaf once he is judged to
be well enough. A few moons later (?), Chimreh also arrives at New Hope.
She eventually settles in at Threetail Household.
An illness strikes Dusk's hawk; Rahirah pulls it through but it's subject to balance problems thereafter. Despite reservations about a brand new cadet who can't glide riding an unstable hawk, Rahirah allows herself to be swayed by Dusk's pleading to let the bird live. The Rovers first make contact with New Hope. Longshanks is unexpectedly reunited with his aunt, Tentmaker, and his nephew, Rain, who have been traveling with the Rovers. Longshanks and Shalamar Recognize. (Summer, ST) The Stinkers finally make their way out of the Mist Marsh again. They start looking for 1) trouble and 2) tribes to "impress into service" (aka the time-honored technique of smash, trample and absorb). |
| NH 7 -- | Bikka, last child of Tekka and Kel, born. First deathstorm
[hurricane] since the colony's founding hits New Hope. Berry (later Quicksilver),
son of Dove and Raventongue, is caught out in the storm and feared dead,
but is found by Raventongue a few days later. (Story, untitled -- V. Bowe)
During one of Voyager's visits, Nennali has a "flashback" and kills Temek, a young human. The resulting trial reveals much about Merek and Nennali's past. They are forbidden to set foot in New Hope proper, but the guesthouse on Voyager's Island is built for them. ("Port of Call") The incident gives Frodis nightmares for years afterwards. Also around this time, Mijo requests a berth on Voyager and is refused by Merek, who claims he doesn't need any landlubbers aboard his ship. |
| NH 8 -- | Birth of Jublo to Shalamar and Longshanks.
(TwN) Birth of Sioko, a son, to Mawna and Stick V. Frodis and Mischa discover a treacherous path behind a spring-fed waterfall in the Crumbling Rocks and follow it to a small hidden cave that looks out over the bay. They dub it the Hideout and keep it a deep dark secret. Later in the year, Frodis's hypnosis Talent manifests, with Mischa as the lucky (?) victim. ("A Talent For Trouble", B. Cummings) |
| NH 9 -- | Chimreh also arrives at New Hope. She eventually settles in at Threetail Household. ("So Much Is New, So Little Gone", K. R. Coleman) |
| NH 10 -- | Arrival of the ship Cowrie, captained by Calypso, at New
Hope. As both females are pregnant --Nightdancer extremely so--and Fletcher
is newly Recognized to Dusk, Calypso, Nightdancer, Fletcher, Crystalmoth
and Nightowl join the community, moving into Greenwillow Household.
Birth of Pearl to Calypso and Nightdancer). Trika named to the Council of Elders, where she serves until her death. (Moon 14) Snowflower grows curious about the circumstances of her conception. ("Heritage," Tales #15 -- R. Pruehs) |
| NH 11 -- | Tawna dies.
Jauren arrives at New Hope in the company of Meiji. He becomes a sometime resident of Risingmist Household, though he eventually spends most of his time at the Tower. Later in the year, Kaethe goes to the Tower to Challenge Meiji over Ban. She loses the challenge and flies off into the wilderness, never to be seen again. Birth of Kit -- later Catspaw-- to Crystalmoth and Nightowl. During a patrol, Dusk falls from her hawk and miscarries. She and Fletcher have a falling out and break up for the first time. Rahirah learns a hard lesson in what it means to be the person in charge enforcing the rules instead of the cocky youngster intent on breaking them. Furious at herself for not insisting that Dusk dissolve the bond with Tailspin and choose another less dangerous hawk, she resolves to be less lenient in the future. |
| NH 12 -- | Stillmorn arrives at New Hope, along with her mother, Coolbreath.
Seeing his chance to scotch Merek's objections, Mijo apprentices with Calypso
to learn sailing. On a trip to Great Water to visit with Calypso's old
mentor Gildenear, the Cowrie discovers Shadowbourne shipwrecked and she
is brought back to New Hope. This same voyage also discovers a Stinker
slave/concubine who ran away from the tribe with her four-year-old child.
The mother is recaptured, while Fletcher and Nightowl barely escape with
the child. They alert the rest of the crew and follow the Stinkers, intent
on resuing the mother, but though they decimate the scout party, the mother
is killed. The crew decides to return to New Hope with their foundlings
rather than continuing on to Great Water. A childless Mraal couple, Simka
and Jenuth, adopt the boy and name him Zigan.
(ST) Vonya Sunwing, a 14-year-old human girl belonging to the Great Falls Sunwing tribe, is captured by the Stinkers while meditating for her Ceremony of Mastery as a shaman. (TwN) Death of Stick V, of disease; Mawna gives birth to a stillborn child. Their daughter Byrah becomes Stick VI and marries Matu, son of Leroni. |
| NH 13 -- | Frodis and Mischa take Stillmorn and Snowflower to the Hideout
for the first time.
Discovering that Shadowbourne is attracted to Piet, but refuses to say anything about it because she regards him as "off limits," Piet and Rahirah ask advice from Heartseeker and get a good deal more than they planned on... eventually leading up to the Great Rigged (sort of) Challenge Fight Secret Plot and Jamboree, and to Shadowbourne's inclusion in Piet and Rahirah's lovemating. (TwN) Mawna marries Rock III. Burkell born to Simka and Jemuth. Fletcher decides he can't live without Dusk and asks her to take him back. Thus begins their on-again-off-again lovemating. |
| NH 14 -- | Birth of Terren, a son, to Trika and Dubyk. (TwN) Birth of Tawno, a son, to Mawna and Rock III. Mawna's son Sioko comes of age and demands to join her clan, thus founding Jetsam Clan with Mawna as Jetsam I. |
| NH 15 -- | Snowflower and Stillmorn become soulsisters. |
| NH 16 -- | Wolfstorm comes to New Hope and develops a massive and annoying
crush on Rahirah, shortly followed by massive and annoying crushes on every
other pure-blooded female elf in the tribe.
(Spring) During a message run to Great Water Holt, Rahirah discovers in a passing conversation with Faience that he is Tandeya's brother. Informed that he has living relatives in Tower Mountain, Faience decides to visit. (Summer) Faience goes to the Tower, stopping by New Hope on the way, where he meets Shadowbourne. (ST) A daughter, Chenka, is born to Sousa by his concubine Vonya. |
| NH 17 -- | Frodis, Mischa, Snowflower and Stillmorn take Wolfstorm to the Hideout. Wolfstorm, showing off his wolfblooded agility to Snowflower and Stillmorn, accidentally causes Frodis to slip; Stillmorn's gliding Talent saves Frodis from a possibly fatal fall. Frodis, furious for the first time in her life, uses her hypnosis magic on Wolfstorm and then, horrified, runs off. A recovered Wolfstorm finds her on the beach and becomes her first (unpleasant and not entirely willing) introduction to joining. Frodis belts him one. Both angry and ashamed of themselves, the two avoid each other for a day or so until their elders decide they must intervene. Much is revealed about Wolfstorm's past and his reasons for being a prize jerk. |
| NH 18 -- | (TwN) Birth of Rabayno, a son, to Mawna and Rock III. |
| NH 19 -- | Recognition of Geibryl and Vallaree. Another deathstorm
strikes New Hope; there is a good deal of damage to the settlement and
some loss of life. Kaidyn is born and three moons later loses her parents
to the deathstorm. She is adopted by her aunt Merissa and nursed at Foxlair
Household.
Silvercloud arrives in the wake of the storm along with his bondbird, Yelloweye. Wolfstorm gets his latest massive and annoying crush, on Adaarah this time. |
| NH 20 -- | More than a few people notice that Faience is making eight-day-long
visits to the Tower bracketed by moon-long visits to New Hope, where he
and Shadowbourne seem to be spending a lot of time together.
Emerel moves to New Hope, joining Whistleleaf Household for hawkrider training. Calypso decides to dismantle the Cowrie and refit her to suit the differing sizes of all available potential crew members. He asks Peysol to help him design a ship that humans and elves could both work on comfortably. Meanwhile, Khepri and Crystalmoth, under Fletcher's direction, begin shaping a protected cove in the North Cliff walls to use as a drydock for the refitting. Mijo finishes his initial apprenticeship with Calypso. When Voyager arrives he again requests a berth. Merek, out of excuses and under pressure from both Lorelee and Nennali, gives in. From this point on, Mijo crews with either Voyager or Cowrie, depending on his own whims and the needs and desires of the respective captains. (And the writers!) The storm season is again a bad one; Adaarah perishes in a deathstorm, struck by a falling tree while saving a pair of human children. Wolfstorm and Silvercloud find her body while cleaning up after the storm; exhausted and on edge, their mental defenses are down and in their mutual shock they discover one another's soul names. Outraged and revolted, they try everything they can think of to rid themselves of the unwanted bond, but since they're both poor-to-average senders, and far too angry and embarrassed to ask advice from anyone else about it, they finally take to snapping at each other every time they meet and getting into pointless fights (in which Silvercloud usually beats the snot out of Wolfstorm.) (TwN) Birth of Peranne, a daughter (later Stick VII), to Stick VI and Matu. Birth of Mayrina, a daughter, to Mawna and Rock III. The birth is a difficult one and the midwives advise Mawna to make this her last child. Mawna, who by now has grandchildren to fuss over, agrees with only slight reluctance. |
| NH 21 -- | While extending the passageways of the North Cove to reach
the cliff top and the beach, Khepri and Crystalmoth discover troll tunnels
that have (apparently) fallen into disuse. While exploring these (against
express parental orders) Pearl and Catspaw discover a single troll smith
living in the tunnels and name him Bilge (his attitude is as stinky as
bilge water). Later that year, the Cowrie is brought into dry dock. Bilge
sees her and immediately agrees to smith all of her fittings. He and Calypso
establish a lasting friendship.
Rael and Suraya, twins, born to Vallaree and Geibryl. Merissa moves Kaidyn to Risingmist once she's weaned. Marriage of Donn and Nella. |
| NH 22 -- | (TwN) Sioko Jetsam marries.
Nella suffers the first of several miscarriages. After suffering constant and incessant teasing from Burkell, Zigan hauls off and hits him, breaking his jaw and removing several teeth. After much discussion, Calypso takes Zigan to Bilge, who agrees to apprentice the young human. |
| NH 23 -- | Sharai, Xylene, and Jilleen decide they can't stand living at New Hope another moment, and return to Tower Mountain. (Story in progress, "Marry in Haste, Repent at Leisure" -- M. Dean / N. Neumark) (TwN) Birth of Matalu, a daughter, to Sioko and mate. |
| NH 26 -- | While surfing a storm tide, Pearl wipes out and severely
damages her foot. Calypso allows the healers to set the bones and treat
for infection, but insists that the rest be stitched up and allowed to
heal naturally to drive the lesson home. She is left with Bilge while Calypso
and crew take the newly refitted Cowrie out for her maiden voyage. Pearl
develops a crush on Zigan.
Faience returns to the use of his Hidden Valley name, Faih, and asks Shadowbourne to lifemate with him and live in Great Water Holt. She accepts. Fond farewells are exchanged and Trailingstar holds them a nice big going-away party. Piet and Rahirah first become aware of Snowflower's peculiar conviction that their relationship is platonic, but shrug it off. Terren is seduced by Kachina of Whistleleaf shortly after her coming of age. It is not a happy experience for Terren. Zigan and Pearl formalize their lovemating. Calypso agrees on the condition that on Festival nights, when they leave the fires it's not together, and preferably with someone of their own race. In this manner, he hopes their interests will turn to more 'compatable' mates. |
| NH 27 -- | Calypso discovers his daughter's infatuation and corners Zigan, promising dire consequences if his daughter is hurt by her interest. Zigan (who up till now was totally oblivious) figures out what he's talking about, finds Pearl's attentions flattering and begins returning her feelings. Pearl eventually seduces Zigan who -- taking Calypso's warning perhaps too much to heart-- allows it because he's afraid that saying 'no' would hurt her.) |
| NH 28 -- | Death of Kel. Natural death of Dubyk. Trika resolves never
to marry again (seeing no point in it since she can have no more children).
(TwN) Tawno mates with Lera of the Bird Clan. |
| NH 29 -- | (ST/TwN) The all-new and hardly improved Stinkers invade
the territory of the Tribe without Name. Sooner than be smashed, trampled
and absorbed, the TwN is forced to flee. Rock III is killed; his niece
becomes Rock IV. Tawno's mate, pregnant with their first child, is also
killed.
(Moon 22) Seahawk arrives at the TwN settlement for his semiannual visit and only narrowly manages to avoid capture. After a quick trip to Great Water Holt to warn the elves that the Stinkers are in the area, he goes searching for his friends. (Moon 24) Seahawk locates the survivors of the TwN and talks them into accompanying him back to New Hope. After he gets the group started in the right direction, he heads back to New Hope posthaste to give the community (Greenwillow Household in particular) fair warning that he's about to drop an entire tribe of humans on them. (aka "Peysol, they are about to follow me home -- may I keep them?" Peysol's reply: "Ask Trika!" Trika's reaction: "You what?!") He then returns to lead the group, which is making extremely slow progress north due to injuries and inclement weather. Frodis visits her father in the Tower (not for the first time) and makes a great impression on Sascha. (She, on the other hand, mistakes him for Dalesian...) |
| NH 30 -- | Birth of Rey to Donn and Nella. Death of Yusu. Partly because
of the large influx of new arrivals at Greenwillow, Calypso decides to
found a new Household, Sea Runner, its basis being the Cowrie's crew and
a few of the Mraal. The new Household will consist of rooms extending from
the Cowrie's cove and incorporating Bilge's tunnels. After much discussion,
Bilge is offered the second seat on the Council. As the move isn't complete
for most of the year, several of the Tribe without Name will have also
settled there by the time it's finished -- including Tawnee Axe. (Moon
1, ST) Some bright member of the Stinkers realizes that somebody or other
really ought to seek out the survivors of the TwN, if any. The two groups
narrowly miss each other.
(Moon 7) Arrival of the Tribe without Name at New Hope. Trika begins reorganizing Greenwillow to accommodate the new arrivals. Trika befriends Barac Stick, and by the end of the year, the two of them have made the decision to marry. (Moon 11) Rahirah finds Sherron Firewing on the backside of the eyries. Sherron meets Kaidyn of Risingmist, promptly falls in love with her and enlists several members of Greenwillow to help him not only win her but win over Kaidyn's guardian Merissa. (Moon 18) Arista Fire marries Trika's third son, Terren (Trika officiates) and immediately gets pregnant. (Moon 21) Arrival of the Stinkers in the New Hope area. Their Chief Hunter, Anjo, dies and is replaced by Mevin. The hunters shoot down a hawk and get Nalkor as a bonus. Vonya drugs him to make his death a little easier, but he escapes. After Nalkor is "found" by Raventongue and healed by Snowflower (untitled fragment -- R. Pruehs), he informs New Hope of a captive living with the Stinkers who wears a necklace similar to Sherron's tattoo. Vonya is rescued and moves into Springreach Household. Arrival of the Stinkers causes Feather to go completely berserk. Trika, against all advice and her own better judgment, goes after the elf. (Projected story, untitled -- R. Pruehs) Vonya Sunwing, Piet, and Bone of the Tribe without Name claim Gull Island as a shamanists' training ground and retreat. Vonya completes her Ceremony of Mastery, with Sherron's aid. (Moon 23) Vonya recruits Kaidyn as her apprentice. With Kaidyn's approval, Sherron acts as "stud" so Vonya can attempt to bear a full-blooded Wing Tribes child. Sascha visits New Hope; he and Frodis lovemate. Sascha confides to her that he intends for them to be lifemate. Frodis is mildly freaked by this, but decides to humor him. **He's crazy, but he has cute freckles.** |
| NH 31 -- | (Moon 1) Winter Solstice. Vonya gets pregnant.
(Moon 7) The Stinkers attack a small group of gatherers, killing Fairen of Foxlair, severely injuring Tawno Rock and capturing Arista Fire. Snowflower sees the attack, alerts New Hope and goes in pursuit, marking the trail. A rescue party (including Sherron, Vonya and Terren) rescue Arista. Muryani of Greenwillow, Trika's granddaughter, is assigned to nurse Tawno. They become friends. (Moon 8) Festival of Love. Arista gives birth to a girl. Sherron is adopted by New Hope (Greenwillow). Somewhere in here Vonya marries Leaf III ("Dance Across the Sky and Double-berry Pie," Tales #24 & #25 -- V. Bowe) True to their promise to Calypso, Ziganand Pearl leave the Festival with one of their own race. In Zigan's case it was Tawnee Axe who -- sick of being teased by other girls her age for her lack of interest in men thus far-- propositions Zigan because he's 'safe'. She gets pregnant. (Moon 11) Once Tawnee figures it out, she tells Pearl and Zigan, and the three start making plans. Pearl drops the hint to Calypso that she and Zigan would like to get married. (Moon 12) Calypso calls a Household meeting, inviting Axe and Stick VI as one of their people is also concerned, to decide if the children should be allowed to petition the Council for permission to marry. They agree that the arguments are well thought-out and should be heard. (Moon 14) A meeting of the Council of Elders is called to hear their petition. Bilge, and Calypso announce that they will not sit in judgement since they are so closely involved. They remove their Robes and sit among the petitioners. (Moon 15) Bilge officiates at Zigan and Pearl's wedding.) (Moon 18) Vonya gives birth to a male child. |
| NH 32 -- | Birth of Roo to Nella and Donn
(Moon 2) Tawnee Axe gives birth to a son, Maarli, who is adopted by Pearl and raised by the three of them. When the child is weaned Tawnee takes a less active role in his upbringing until he starts called Pearl 'mother' and Tawnee 'Aunt'. (Moon 16) Sherron proposes; Kaidyn, with Merissa's approval, accepts; the wedding is set for one moon hence. Peysol puts the finishing touches on the wedding clothes, then volunteers as Sherron's benthe (best man). Sherron and Kaidyn ask Leravie to be m'rentelle (officiating Elder). (Moon 17) Marriage of Kaidyn and Sherron. Sherron moves to Risingmist Household. (Fall) Twins born to Arista Fire and Terren of Greenwillow. |
| NH 33 -- | Marriage of Mayrina Jetsam and Bevin Stick (younger brother
of Barac); their son Tesho is born later that same year. Marriage of Tawno
Rock to Muryani of Greenwillow Kaidyn miscarries her first pregnancy due
to a deformity in the fetus.
Piper born to Nightowl and Crystalmoth of Sea Runner. |
| NH 34 -- | Death of Tekka
Fourth child born to Arista Fire and Terren. A daughter, Tulera, born to Muryani and Tawno Rock |
| NH 35 -- | Khepri, much of his major work at New Hope completed, returns
to Tower Mountain.
An orphaned, low-caste Mraal baby named Hejong is adopted by Donn and Nella. Wander Wind, Tarl and Crimson arrive at New Hope from Great Water Holt. Kaidyn miscarries again. |
| NH 36 -- | Birth of Aluli to Mayrina Jetsam and Bevin Stick
Fifth child born to Arista Fire and Terren. Birth of Eden to Muryani and Tawno Rock. As an experiment, Frodis and Sascha decide to spend the whole year together, half in the Tower and half in New Hope. Frodis attempts the luxury life in the Tower with less than success; Sascha makes an attempt at "roughing it" in New Hope. Both abandon the attempts WAY ahead of schedule... (Possible story "It's A Nice Place To Visit, But..." B. Cummings) |
| NH 37 -- | Donn and Nella adopt another Mraal child, a boy named Kim.
Kaidyn miscarries a third time (child sired by Terren). Twins (boy and
girl) born to Arista Fire and Terren; the girl is named Neenah.
Tanyel and Rahirah enlist Dove's help to have a second child, this one to be raised by Tanyel in the Tower when it is old enough. |
| NH 38 -- | Triplets born to Arista Fire and Terren. The midwives arrange
for Snowflower to sterilize both of them. Kaidyn gives birth to a girl
two moons early after spending half of her pregnancy in bed. The child
is named Sukana. ("The Dream Child" -- V. Bowe)
Crimson gains a soul name and learns the truth of his father's past from Wander Wind. THE CUP |
| NH 39 -- | Birth of Shahn to Rahirah and Tanyel |
| NH 41 -- | A sea monster (later given the name of "Madfluke") attacks
New Hope. Several lives are lost, including those of Wyn, Shahn, Mayrina
Jetsam and Bevin Stick. The combined efforts of elves and humans finally
defeat the monster. Griefstricken, Havrin moves back to Tower Mountain
permanently; Ahrien also moves back.
Rahirah feels guilty since she was able to do nothing to save Shahn, and has the irrational feeling that she's somehow being punished for the effrontery of having her second child via a healer's assist instead of waiting for nature to take its course. ("Unity of Heart, Part II -- For Worse") A strange, apparently deranged elf is found washed up in the surf in the aftermath of the sea-creature's attack. Wander Wind recognizes the elf as Tresses, chieftess of a sea-going elf tribe called the Kindred. Later, several strange vessels sail into the bay; they are Kindred ships and they have come looking for Tresses. |
| NH 42 -- | Donn and Nella adopt their last child from the Mraal, a
girl named Mija who is afflicted with mild cerebral palsy. Ceyte comes
to New Hope again, seeking inspiration for several new works. She intends
to remain for a year. She stays for seven. Doreel accompanies Ceyte to
New Hope, fulfilling his promise to family and friends. He stays with Crystel
and Jiko.
Ilayo lovemates with Mischa. Ilayo is taken on as an apprentice at Greenwillow, mainly for textile arts but for other things too (gardening, archery, mediating skills, cooking, herbalism, etc. ;) |
| NH 43 -- | Death of Mawna, aka Jetsam I. Mayrah (Flotsam), her elfin
soulsister, is devastated. Mawna's granddaughter Matalu becomes Jetsam
II.
Doreel decides he must return to the Tower, but takes Catspaw along as an apprentice. They return by supply train. |
| NH 46 -- | After a long quiescent period, the Stinkers raid Servan's Enclave, killing Sunbreath. Uko blames New Hope's "make them go away" policy for her father's death; she comes to New Hope, chews the Council out for negligence, announces that she's going to slaughter the Stinkers root and branch, and asks for volunteers. The New Hope Council refuses to endorse genocide, though it's TBD if any individual New Hope residents decide to join Uko's campaign on their own. Some New Hope residents plan to warn the Stinkers or stopping Uko, but Servan's arrival forstalls Uko's invasion before it can really get off the ground.. |
| NH 47 -- | Emerel develops a crush on Nineki and begins courting her. She couldn't care less. |
| NH 49 -- | Ceyte returns to Tower Mountain, taking Beesweets with her as her apprentice. Death of Barac Stick. |
| NH 50 -- | Beliel Recognizes a young healer from Deathwater Falls,
Tailshadow. She flees him and finds sanctuary at New Hope. (Story in progress,
"Birthright" -- R. Pruehs) The New Hope elves thus learn of the survival
of the Exiles. Tailshadow's arrival at New Hope and the subsequent news
of her Recognition to Beliel causes Tarl to have a serious emotional crisis.
THE CUP
Tesho Stick decides to apprentice with Calypso and joins Sea Runner Household. Flotsam, thinking that the hard work and change of scene may help her shake off the lingering melancholy caused by Mawna's death, elects to come with him. Piper falls head-over-heels in crush with Flotsam. He confides this to his friends Maarli and Tesho Stick. Tesho, though sworn to secrecy, feels this would be just what 'Auntie Mayrah' needs, and proceeds to try to set them up. Maarli also thinks it's a good idea, and tries to help. Each of the humans will pass the challenge of getting the pair together along to their children and grandchildren. Arista Fire named to the Council of Elders. Terren is asked at the same time but refuses, preferring to concentrate on his work. |
| NH 51 -- | (Moon 8) Stenos Fire and Galen Fire, having some moons earlier
begun hero-worshipping Seahawk and Raventongue, resolve to do something
that will put them on their hopefully destined path of hero-hood. Trying
to protect the boys from their own folly, Seahawk and Raventongue manage
to get captured by the Stinkers and have to be rescued by . . . guess who?
("UnNameable ' Venture," Tales #25 - 28 -- R.Pruehs)
Vanjir decides to visit New Hope. He meets Eden, a human girl. The attraction is mutual. Against everyone's advice, Vanjir makes Eden his mate, bringing up the precedent of Pearl and Zigan (and blithely ignoring cautionary tales of several cross-species liasons which ended less happily.) Nalkor recruits Vanjir for a New Hope hawkrider, to be trained at New Hope and the Tower. Cuendee arrives for Autumn Festival with an escort of Shigyeveth. She elects to stay at New Hope for a few years, moving into Foxlair Household along with four young Shigyeveth: a junior Star Priestess, Ngeryashin; two "bodyguards," Khriravrovrish and Rhagyemrochev, and a Daughter of the Mare (horse priestess), Shepyivrutyem. |
| NH 52 -- | At the Midwinter Festival, Tawno Rock relates the story
of Madfluke for the first time.
(Moon 5/6) A delegation from New Hope, including Peysol and Leravie, visits the Tower to negotiate new trade agreements. (Spring) The Stinkers' leaders ponder upon the awesome power of the spirits and how to circumvent it. Hearing rumors of a tribe far to the west with great magic and the ability to bind spirits to their will, they send a small band of warriors to search for this vital knowledge. The search party eventually tracks down the location of the Redrock Valley, and captures a Mraal herdsman who admits that yes, spirits live in the Holy Mountain and grant great bakhan to their followers. (Fall) Aluli Jetsam, Neenah Fire, and Jiko go on an exploring trip along the coastline to the north of New Hope. They discover a hitherto unknown island which is home to a superabundance of albino animals, and two wandering elves, Shelee and Hushleaf. They bring the wanderers back to New Hope. (Projected story, "Three Girls in a Boat" -- D. Beaver / M. Dean) |
| NH 53 -- | (Spring) The Stinkers send a larger war party to the Redrock
Valley to steal some of the magic to be found there. On the way, they capture
a wandering elf called Nemka. Vanjir, out on hawkrider training excercises,
saves her and warns the Tower of the imminent attack. ("Nemka" V. Bowe)
The Stinkers are beaten off fairly easily (their numbers are too few) but
they manage to obtain a 'talisman.' They return home in triumph.
(Summer) The Legion of Imbeciles snitches the 'talisman' to raid New Hope. The raid is unsuccessful, the talisman is lost, and Jeorg is killed. Piet finds Lehni wandering around disconsolate after the battle, and brings him back to Trailingstar. A long wrangle ensues in Council over the tribe's policy towards the Stinkers. A significant fraction of the elders propose the idea that the tribe's been going about things all wrong: periodically fighting or scaring the Stinkers and hoping they'll go away is simply not working. A long-term plan which involves slowly undermining the Stinkers' beliefs in demons is proposed instead, over the bitter objections of the "The only good Stinker is a dead Stinker" faction. After much debate, the Council agrees to try the new plan, but doesn't go so far as to forbid people from continuing with the old one. Proponents of the new idea complain that this will cripple their efforts, but go with that concessions they were able to get. |
| NH 54 -- | Dove, Feather, Seahawk and Raventongue finally all realize that they are a foursome. Dove and Feather get pregnant to celebrate. (Story in progress, "Change Partners and . . ." -- R. Pruehs) |
| NH 55 -- | An extremely hot, dry summer makes for a poor harvest.
Moki of Servan's Enclave enters hawkrider training at New Hope. He has some serious, and occasionally dangerous, problems, mostly because the training involves being separated from his twin brother Onay for significant periods of time for the first time. These are eventually resolved by including Onay in much of the training; after that, Moki excels and progresses rapidly. Stenos is given the opportunity to go to Tower Mountain and become Nez's apprentice in music. He takes it. (Story, K.R. Coleman) |
| NH 56 -- | Heavy snowstorm during the second moon of winter (2 - 3
feet), followed by a warm spell which causes extensive flooding; writers,
for the use of.
Birth of Wasp and Twilight (henceforward known as "the twins") to Dove and Seahawk and Feather and Raventongue, respectively. Vanjir catches Emerel in dereliction of duty and has him booted out of the hawkriders, blackens his eye and humiliates him in front of Nineki. This is the beginning of Vanjir and Emerel's feud. About this same time, Nineki resolves to go to Tower Mountain to seek training in her rockshaping Talent. She hitches a ride with Tanyel, telling only Terren the Three-Word Wonder where she is going. Peysol has a cow. Deprived of his hawk, Emerel follows Nineki to the Tower. |
| NH 63 -- | Vanjir, to his dismay, finds that he is having trouble dealing with the fact that Eden is aging. |
| NH 65 -- | Death of Trika in her sleep. Merek and Nennali request permission to attend the funeral. Results pending. |
| NH 66 -- | Eden petitions the Risingmist Elders for a divorce, and gets it. She and Vanjir part ways. |
| NH 67 -- | Eden marries Ladun Risingmist. |
| NH 75 -- | Doleera unexpectedly appears and "buzzes" New Hope, getting
captured in the process. She eventually escapes, leaving New Hope with
a number of disturbing things to think about. ("Bad Penny," D. Beaver)
Rahirah and Jand make some deductions about the general area where Doleera's new base has to be, and set out to find it. Nalkor decides to turn the Flight Leader's position over to Vanjir ahead of schedule, on the theory that Doleera does not know Vanjir's "style" and won't be able to predict his actions readily. Vanjir must finally decide whether or not he can throw in his lot with New Hope for good. Vanjir abandons a good deal of his distillery hobby at this point. |
| NH 76 -- | Moki and Onay leave the Tower/New Hope area on the first of their long journeys. |
| NH 84 -- | Eden dies of old age. |
| NH 93 -- | Meiji comes to New Hope on what is meant to be a vacation to help her get things sorted out as regards her second pregnancy and her relationship with Vaynyar; Jheredd and Vaynyar follow her. (untitled story, V. Bowe) |
| NH 96 -- | Treetall, Tailshadow's uncle and Doleera's Recognized, "appears" at New Hope, having been dropped there by Doleera to safeguard him against her fellow Exiles. Though he has no idea of the direction he was brought from or where his tribe's current home lies, a few sending pictures are enough for Piet (among others) to realize that the Exiles' "secret base" is in the Hidden Valley. One of the astral projectors sends the information to the Tower. |
| NH 99 -- | Hidden Valley attacks Tower. Shadaln wounded by assassins,
retires from Tower leadership. Rahirah learns of the Hidden Valley's attack
on Tower Mountain when Tanyel arrives to tell her that Reevirah has been
severely injured and may not survive. Rahirah rushes back to the Tower,
and she and Vaynyar have a number of things out while their mother hovers
near death. The two of them reconcile their differences, after a fashion.
(Projected story, untitled)
A number of Tower elves level the accusation that the attack is New Hope's fault, because they should have known what Doleera was capable of, and "done something" about her when they had her in their custody. A period of somewhat frosty intertribal relations ensues. The Council decides to send scouts out to keep a closer eye on Hidden Valley movements. |
| NH 100 -- | Shadaln relocates to New Hope and settles in Risingmist Household. |
| NH 110 -- | Piet and Rahirah run into a troll while out herb-gathering. ("Unity of Heart, Part III -- For Richer") |
| NH 114 -- | New Hope concludes a trade agreement with the Bitter Springs trolls. |
| NH 120 -- | In order to make the caravan route easier, New Hope sends a group of humans, trolls, and rockshapers to build a waystation at the ford across the Greatwater River where it joins the Redrock River. |
| NH 123 -- | Starling, Doleera's daughter by Treetall, arrives at New Hope, having come to be with her father. |
| NH 125 -- | Snowflower interrupts a game of jackstraws. [Story, "Best Two Out Of Three", B. Cummings] |
| NH 126 -- | Heartseeker goes to spy on the Hidden Valley, hoping to make contact with his old tribemates and perhaps indulge in a spot of subversion. He ends up Recognizing Basile, one of the original Exiles, and eventually escaping with her and a Deathwater Falls healer named Shade, both of whom he brings home to New Hope. Mouse is dismayed at Heartseeker's Recognition and ends up Challenging Basile. Basile ultimately fails the test of Heart -- inducing Heartseeker to choose to stay with her, since he feels she needs him more than Mouse does. [projected story, "All Kinds of Sorrow" -- M. Dean /T. Gardner] |
| NH 131 -- | Faih finally realizes how unhappy Shadowbourne is in the Tower, and the two of them return to New Hope. |
| NH 139 -- | Rahirah tries a gliding trick which works a little too well. [Story, "What Goes Up..." B. Cummings] |
| NH 140 -- | (Summer) Piet discovers a wounded elf, Steelspun, on an
herb-gathering trip. Steelspun was raised by humans and is wary of other
elves but eventually grows to trust Piet. [Story, "Like A Spirit Spun From
Steel", Elaine Pedee]
(Winter) Steelspun, who refuses to come into the settlement but continues to hang around on the fringes, is caught in a blizzard and rescued by Rahirah and Piet; they convince him to stay in Trailingstar until the bad weather lets up. Steelspun stays the winter, gradually coming to realize that he has been craving elven company all his life. [Story, "Door Into Hope" E. Pedee & B. Cummings] |
| NH 141 -- | Steelspun begins to regain some of the memories of his childhood, with disasterous results.[Story, "Estuans Interius Ira Vehementi", E. Pedee] Rahirah learns what Steelspun's elven parents were like, and quietly determines that if she ever runs into them they're dead meat. The long process of healing begins to fix the damage in Steel's soul. |
| NH 142 -- | Rahirah and Piet lovemate with Steelspun (lasts 10-15 yrs., till Steel is more sure of himself) |
| NH 146 -- | After a particularly painful healing session, Steel runs off to hide. He's found by his lovemates and after Steel does everything he can to try to drive them away, they stick by him and make him realize what love really is. [Story, untitled, E. Pedee] |
| NH 156 -- | Beyla is sent to New Hope to hush up the unfortunate incident
with the Preserver at the Tower (as well as to gain additional training
in her healing talent from Dove.)
Beyla has a summer romance with Rahirah and Piet, and Snowflower's Peculiar Delusion is put to the test. [Story-in-progress, untitled, B. Cummings & C. Haywood] |
| NH 169 -- | Piet makes an inadvisable (to say the least) deal with the troll trader Mossrock in exchange for a harp, and Rahirah must figure a way out of the bargain. ("Unity of Heart, Part IV -- For Poorer") |
| NH 172 -- | Steel is as healed as he can be and asks to be officially adopted into New Hope. He becomes a regular hawkrider. |
| NH 174 -- | Trailingstar Household is severely damaged by a fire. |
| NH 175 -- | Wolfstorm meets a Brightcolor scout while out hunting, one of the older warriors born back in the desert, and recognizes him or her as someone he'd known back home -- his birth-tribe had occasionally traded with, occasionally been raided by, the Brightcolor tribe. The two swap a few stories about old times and part. Over the next few eights of years, Wolfstorm and this elf meet several more times. Wolfstorm hears plenty of stories about the glorious raids and battles, and life at New Hope begins to seem very tame and dull. In turn, the Brightcolor warriors are able to sift a lot of useful information from Wolfstorm's stories. |
| NH 178 -- | Steelspun takes his first courier run to New Hope, finds out about the hazards Tower life, makes friends with Doreel, and starts a long distance relationship with Collya. |
| NH 180 -- | Steel courts the attention of Jand. Jand, somewhat mystified by the process but nonetheless flattered, accepts and they become lovers. |
| NH 200 -- | Sheridyn Shadow-wing born to Springreach Household. |
| NH 205 -- | Wolfstorm is brought to meet Doleera; completely bowled over by her warrior-babe charisma, he accepts her vague promises of "being appreciated" and begins willingly feeding information to the Hidden Valley. |
| NH 215 -- | Sheridyn convinces Roaring Rapids' Sunwing shaman to accept him as her apprentice. He is sent to the Shadow-wing camp to safeguard him. The Sunwing dies within the year. Despite fierce political jockeying from his rival, Sheridyn is installed as the Shadow-wings' Sunwing shaman. |
| NH 223 -- | Envoys arrive at New Hope from a previously unknown human city-state known as Taiakaar. They wish to establish trade relations with New Hope, and have very specific ideas about whom they want as envoys: Dove, Feather, Raventongue and Seahawk. Puzzled, the four accept the invitation and leave for the city of Taiakaar. ("Deployment" -- R. Pruehs) |
| NH 225 -- | (Spring) Hidden Valley attacks New Hope and takes hostages (by intention, the elf Elders of the various Households), intending to hold them indefinitely and extract tribute from New Hope in return for their continued health and safety. Hostage list includes Piet, Rahirah, Nalkor, Jand, Peysol, Leravie, Crystel, Chimreh, Evanda, Geibryl, and Vallaree. Leravie attempts to escape and gets swept down Roaring Rapids river. She washes up near Roaring Rapids Sunwing village and seeks sanctuary among them. (Various stories-in-progress, currently under extensive development and revision. See the Hostage Crisis Timeline-in-progress for details.) |
| NH 229 -- | (Spring) Hostages (minus Geibryl, Evanda, and Jand, all
of whom are dead) return, having escaped from Hidden Valley.
Second attack on New Hope by Hidden Valley. Beliel's daughter Mink, anticipating disaster, prepares for a quick departure with as many of her relatives and Beliel's followers as she can convince to go with her, in case Beliel's attack goes awry. Crystalmoth is killed during the battle. Nightowl, feeling his death, goes on a rampage to avenge him and is killed herself. Piper is with Flotsam when he learns of their deaths and turns to her for comfort. They -- finally-- manage to get together, to the great relief of two human families. Piper holds off on the funeral, having his parents wrapped in Preserver coccoons, until Catspaw can make it to New Hope. Starling nearly killed by Beliel; Doleera, witnessing this, attacks Beliel herself. Their battle leaves Doleera severely wounded and Beliel mortally wounded and self-entombed. Red Blade and Mink escape and return to the Hidden Valley on a stolen hawk. Mink, certain that the Tower and New Hope will counterattack and destroy the Hidden Valley in its weakened state, makes good on her escape plan and leaves. Afterglow, Lilac, Browneyes, Foxtail, Heron, and a number of other relatives and former Beliel loyalists go with her. They head for the hills and become a band of nomadic raiders, preying on all the settlements alike. Mink forms a long-term plan of vengeance against New Hope for the supposed death of her father. Her sister Trinket heads for New Hope instead. In the aftermath of the battle, Snowflower Recognizes Lyeth, a Hidden Valley shapeshifter under orders to release (and spirit away) Beliel. Lyeth runs like a scared rabbit; Snowflower, following him to find out what he is up to and to settle the Recognition, stumbles onto the Beliel release plot. The plotters, perforce, knock her on the head and bring her along. Messengers arrive from Taiakaar inviting representatives to a peace conference between New Hope and Hidden Valley. The invitations accepted; conference scheduled to begin in midsummer. (Summer) Peace Conference at Taiakaar. Peysol heads the New Hope delegation; other members TBD. (Wasp will come along as Peysol's aide.) Reunion of Peysol and Leravie with Dove and her lifemates. Peysol and Leravie request Dove's help in conceiving a child. She joyfully agrees. Dove, Raventongue, Feather, Seahawk and Snowflower return to New Hope. (Fall) Trinket finally arrives at New Hope, exhausted, and demands to see "Lord Meiron's son" to tell him of a dreadful danger her sister is preparing. Initially taken to see Mikail, Trinket throws a hissy fit. Since she can't give any definite description of what Mink's dreadful plan is, (and let's face it, this is Trinket) her warnings are not taken very seriously. Trinket establishes herself in Trailingstar Household to 'protect' Piet (and incidentally convince him that they are destined lifemates.) (Projected story, G. Breshears) (Fall) Nineki convinces Emerel to take charge of the New Hope Choral Society in time for the Autumn Festival. Combination of colder weather, late hours, and general stress -- plus the fact that he wasn't really fully recovered from the last time -- lead Peysol to succumb to another bout of pneumonia. Leravie, Arteuran, and the various Taiakaari physicians manage to pull him through. In the aftermath of this illness, Peysol and Arteuran become soulbrothers. Peysol returns to New Hope under "doctor's orders," along with Leravie and a pair of high level Taiakaari monks. (later in the year) Other delegates come home for the winter. New Hope and Taiakaar initiate (or resume) trade. Trade also initiated between New Hope and Hidden Valley. Several Hidden Valley elves move to New Hope, either for personal reasons or because of the peace settlements. Tiko Fire's husband dies of pneumonia. Rahirah tries with variable success to resume her old life and duties in the eyrie--Silvercloud wants out, she wants back in, but despite improvements, Rahirah is still easily angered and frustrated, and finds it difficult to concentrate. She alternates between depression at her slow progress and frenzied attempts to "do better." She does improve gradually, but it is an exhausting period for everyone involved. Frodis, torn by her own guilt over her involvement in the prank which resulted in Geibryl's death and her anger at the Hidden Valley in general, finds it very hard to deal with the changes in her mother and the two drift apart. |
| NH 230 -- | Birth of Ciddara to Shadaln. Windstorm is the probable
father, but Shadaln does not acknowlege him.
Rahirah resigns from the Council when it becomes obvious she's not capable of discharging her duties as an elder. |
| NH 231 -- | Birth of Mistkit to Snowflower and Lyeth. Arteuran attends
the birth in astral form. Lyeth and Lodestar arrive at New Hope immediately
after the birth, having been delayed by bad weather. Needless to say, Lyeth
is in deep kimchee . . . Snowflower has had two years to develop a REAL
mad on, and now acts like he doesn't exist. Lodestar and Stillmorn roll
their eyes, sigh deeply, and start working on the reconciliation, possibly
with the help of those well-known experts, Bugdance and Heartseeker.
Birth of Deahjia to Leravie and Peysol. Startide Household established by Nineki, Emerel, Frodis, Catsclaw and Tiko Fire. |
| NH 233 -- | Tiko meets a very attractive young Wing Tribe man at the
Festival of Love, and marries him.
Desertbloom comes to New Hope with her daughter Dream to "make her fortune" (and perhaps also to see Peysol). Longshanks is attracted to her, and various people who think that it's A) time Longshanks had a full-time lovemate, and B) a good idea to steer Desertbloom out of Leravie's way, contrive to throw the two of them together. (Story, "You Just May Be The One", R. Pruehs) Lodestar starts spending a good deal of time at Springreach Household. Over the course of time various Springreach residents and other interested parties begin to suspect what is in fact true: that the young healer is in love with Vallaree, though he refuses even to speak to her about his feelings, knowing all too well what she went through in the Hidden Valley. Vallaree, for her part, comes to regard him as a friend. TBD when she finally tumbles to the true state of affairs, and what they do about it. |
| NH 234 -- | Piet, trying to turn Trinket's advances aside without hurting
her feelings, says Exactly The Wrong Thing in Rahirah's hearing. The two
of them have the first really major argument of their lovemating (and it's
not what you think it is, either...) Bugdance and Heartseeker decide to
do a little preventive medicine, and start steering Trinket at various
other males, with various degrees of success.
Wildrider (Yalon) born to Catsclaw. He is given the child name of "Blink." (Catsclaw said that "all she had to do was blink and he was gone.") Midnight is finally convinced to give up the search for his missing daughter, but he does not give up hope. |
| NH 236 -- | Emerel and Nineki Recognize. |
| NH 237 -- | Death of Kozheraaru, Her Radience of Taiakaar. Peysol, warned of her last illness, visits Taiakaar to make his farewells and to be with Arteuran for the funeral. (Since this is a state funeral, he can also pay the settlement's formal respects at the same time.) |
| NH 238 -- | A request arrives from the Hidden Valley that the New Hope
healers accept Doleera as a patient; she has fallen into a stupor from
which none of the Hidden Valley healers can wake her. A great deal of argument
over whether they should take Doleera in and heal her results.
Twilight becomes Doleera's soulsister during Doleera's healing. Sylvan born to Nineki. |
| NH 239 -- | While Doleera is recovering, her bond-hawk flies off. |
| NH 240 -- | Reports arrive at New Hope that a hawk is stealing kills from the Wing Tribes. Suspecting that it's Doleera's, Rahirah and Chimreh take the newly-recovered Doleera out to deal with the hawk. Unfortunately the hawk is killed by one of the Wing hunters before Doleera can re-establish her bond. (Story, "No More To Use the Sky", B. Cummings) Upon their return, Charise reprimands Rahirah for setting her patient back, which precipitates a screaming match; Rahirah lights out for the wild blue yonder. (Story, untitled, B. Cummings) |
| NH 243 -- | Frodis, increasingly upset about Doleera's 'preferential
treatment', has an angry blow-up about the whole matter. Rahirah is stunned;
intent on her own recovery, she had not realized how deeply Frodis had
been affected. After some consultation, Tanyel is contacted, and he agrees
to take Frodis to Tower Mountain for an indeterminate length of time.
Blink, now Pacer, meets his older sister Jeimi for the first time, when she visits New Hope with her lifemate, Cort. |
| NH 244 -- | Twilight Recognizes Seahawk's brother, Flare. The two do not lifemate. |
| NH 245 -- | Doleera leaves New Hope, taking Twilight with her.
Pacer/Yalon accidentally blacksends someone, and is packed off to the Tower to learn to control his rapidly strengthing sending-and sending-related powers, to prevent any further accidents. |
| NH 247 -- | Pacer (Yalon) starts learning to cook in the kitchens at Startide. |
| NH 252 -- | Pacer (Yalon) finally earns his adult Brightcolor name, Wildrider. |
| NH 253 -- | Aquene's human mother dies; on her deathbed, she confesses to her "daughter" that they stole her, and urges her to find her own people. Terrified, Aquene (who now thinks of herself as Ailia, and remembers nothing about her very early years) flees the home she thought she'd been born in. After several weeks of wandering, and almost starving as she was ill-prepared for such a trial, she stumbles onto the campsite of Nez and wingmate (?), who are en route to New Hope on courier duty. Nez recognizes (small r) her because of her resemblance to her parents, and coaxes her to trust them. He begins to teach her to speak elvin all over again, to draw up submersed memories of her childhood and her father before taking her back to New Hope. (Story in progress -- "Once Upon A Wintertime") |
| NH 257 -- | Frodis returns to New Hope and rejoins Startide Household. Her overall mood and attitude is much improved, but she misses Skaedi more than she expected she would. |
| NH 260 -- | Peysol's continuing respiratory problems lead him to spend some years at Tower (a warmer, drier place than New Hope). |
| NH 275 -- | Alethian is sufficiently recovered from the damage done to her talent by the trolls' drugs to 'go out' again. |
| NH 276 -- | While out of her body, searching for other elves, Alethian runs into Piet, also out of body. Fearing a repeat of the failure of the Hidden Valley elves to rescue her, Alethian mind-snares him and informs the New Hope people that she will let Piet go if they come and rescue her. Mijo takes the "Shimmerbird" and crew to find Alethian. After the successful rescue, Alethian returns Piet's spirit to his body, and they promptly Recognize. ("Shades of Grey", "Unity of Heart Part VI -- In Health", B. Cummings) Despite Alethian's massively tangled feelings about Piet, she agrees to become part of Trailingstar Household and raise the child there. Upon returning to New Hope, Alethian conceives a Grand Passion for Feather... (Story-in-progress, untitled, B. Cummings) |
| NH 278 -- | Methyr born to Alethian. |
| NH 288 -- | (winter) Ionell, an elf from Steelspun's home tribe, shows
up at New Hope and is astonished to find Steelspun alive. He learns the
story of how Steelspun's parents drove him out and vows to return home
and bring them to justice. He stays at New Hope for a few moons and then
returns home.
(spring to early summer) Shadowfix literally breezes into New Hope and smashes his glider on the Eyrie Cliffs. Steelspun is the first one to find him and offers to help him repair the glider, but since there aren't a lot of trees in the area, the process will take a while. Their personalities clash, but they form a strong friendship which deepens with time. |
| NH 290 -- | Luquentis and Shakala, Steelspun's parents, show up with
several of their tribesmates, looking for revenge on Steelspun for the
trouble he caused them by turning up alive. They capture Steelspun and
Dusk, kill their hawks, and beat the elves severely, causing Dusk to miscarry
her second child. A party of elves and humans from New Hope rescue the
two and capture the renegades, but Steelspun is blacksent into near-mindlessness
before he can be gotten out of sending range. Rahirah, furious with Luquentis
and convinced that he is another Beliel who must be stopped before he gets
worse, kills him. ("The Female Of The Species", B. Cummings)
The killing sets off a firestorm of debate in New Hope as to the morality of her actions. Rahirah is tried for murder by the Council and eventually sentenced to having her gliding talent blocked, and being forbidden to carry weapons, for several eights of years. A number of people are estranged from Rahirah after this. Piet's decision to stay with her drives a wedge between him and Snowflower, who blames Rahirah for the problem she's having with her magical talent after her failure to stop Rahirah from killing Luquentis. Steelspun is unable to recover fully, and his lifemate, Shadowfix, decides to take him away from the bad memories associated with New Hope in the hopes that this will aid his recovery. They leave with the Caravan elves. Fletcher realizes how close he came to losing Dusk entirely, and finally commits to their relationship, in spite of their differences. Rose Startide dies. Wildrider takes over as head cook of Startide. |
| NH 292 -- | Mink finally begins to put her plan for revenge into action; her bandits capture Wasp. Mink uses him as a test case for destroying memory and personality, intending to do the same to Piet at a later date. She frames Heron for the dirty deed. Wasp lives, but his 'self' is effectively destroyed and must be rebuilt; he is, literally, no longer the same person after this. |
| NH 299 -- | Mink's bandits capture Piet. The thought of what happened to Steelspun and Wasp happening to Piet is completely insupportable; Rahirah wrangles her way into the rescue party despite her theoretical non-combatant status, intending to bring him home in one piece come hell or high water. Afterglow, realizing that his sister has gone around one too many bends, but unwilling to surrender her to the "vengeance" of Dove and Feather, uses his talent to "put her to sleep" for good. Afterglow and Lilac return to New Hope and then travel on to Tower Mountain, where he is at last reunitied with Goth. (Projected Story, "Give the Devil His Due" G. Breshears; untitled story, B. Cummings) |
| NH 300 -- | While working with Nez on controlling her sending, Alethian recalls her part in the sack of the Hidden Valley. Consumed with guilt, she tells Piet all, and immediately runs off to Tower Mountain before he has a chance to get over the shock. |

Long As Ye Both Shall Live" by B. Cummings)
Wildrider and Anja become lovers (very briefly, but very passionately). |
| NH 304 -- | Piet and Rahirah ask Dove to aid them in conceiving a child. Snowflower, who still considers Rahirah a murderer and cannot understand why Piet is still with her, is not happy about the request. [Story, untitled, B. Cummings] |
| NH 306 -- | Peritha born to Rahirah.
Pearl-ash (formerly of the Plains Hunters) arrives at New Hope with her son Sunfoal. She settles in Startide. |

| NH 314 -- | Anja visits New Hope to apologize to Methyr; the two of them glumly and nobly agree that they're 'too different' to be lovemates. Rahirah indulges in some discreet romantic encouragement. Anja's questions about Rahirah's current situation lead Rahirah to some unexpected conclusions. |
| NH 323 -- | Sudu, Tyvek, and Kanwar arrive at New Hope from Godlings' Reach. They decide to stay for awhile so Sudu can study astral projection with Piet. Peritha gets a crush on Sudu, but he doesn't notice. |
| NH 330 -- | Steelspun and Shadowfix return to New Hope. Rahirah's term of punishment runs out; her gliding talent is restored. Worried over whether she can regain her old level of competence, she asks Vanjir to put her through cadet training again to make sure she can still handle the job. |
| NH 331 -- | Shadowfix Recognizes Collya on one of her mail runs from the Tower. They hit upon a unique solution to Steelspun's feeling 'left out' of their liason. Collya returns to the Tower, promising to return in plenty of time for the birth. |
| NH 332 -- | Vanjir suggests, and Rahirah agrees, that her remaining
in the cadets any longer is unnecessary; she returns to full-time hawkrider.
(AUTUMN) Collya returns to New Hope for the end of her pregnancy. She stays there until the children are weaned. |
| NH 333 -- | Setitahn/Shadepool and Dorilyan/Dash born to Collya and the guys. She stays at New Hope long enough to see the children weaned and settled before going home to Tower Mountain. |
| NH 337 -- | Collya returns to Tower Mountain. |
| NH 351 -- | Naveen, one of the founding High Ones of the Old Settlement,
turns up with a strange High One, Arin, in tow. She tells a fantastic story
about a group of early-generation elves who attempted to create another
Shell; the attempt failed and the mini-Shell is now careening wildly through
time, causing all kinds of problems which will get worse and worse if it's
not stopped soon. The High Ones want Piet, whom they insist is necessary
to stop the Shell, to come with them. Piet agrees, and a number of other
elves and humans (volunteers welcome!) go along for backup, scouting and
protection. (Story in progress, C. Haywood) On the way, Rahirah experiences

| NH 394 -- | Several New Hope elves run afoul of the bandits again... or maybe it's the other way around. (Stories in progress, "The Bandit Life's For Me" B. Cummings; "Just To See You Smile" K. Coleman) Kyeer and Cheyvah born to Rahirah and Piet out of Recognition; Frog (later Fever) born to Chimreh and Twill out of Recognition.
