Other info: Strong-willed, beautiful, reckless, and energetic; once one of the liveliest and most unpredictable of the Tower folk.  Xylene's restlessness caused her to invest her talents in many areas -- often all at the same time! -- and she could not resist a challenge. Constantly developing new projects, talking with people whose talents were needed for their implementation and convincing them to participate.  Strongly and artistically tempramental, confident in self. Loved figuring out what made others "tick".
Occasionally had a tendency of coming across as condescending or sarcastic, but generally had enough empathy to realize she had hurt the other person, and enough charisma to "put things right" again.
She and Kesik were very much opposites in temperament, but very much in love; her children were very dear to her.
It was considered a shock, almost a scandal, when Tyaar announced Xylene's sudden "decision" to become Functional. Unbeknownst to most of the Tower folk, however, the choice was not Xylene's own. She had gone to Tyaar, telling him that the Tower environment was unhealthy and stifling, and announcing / seeking his blessing for her intention to lead an expedition Outside. Knowing her charisma only too well and seeing her determination, Tyaar was afraid Xylene might very well succeed in her goal. He saw this as not only weakening Tower defenses but potentially as a cause for unrest among those remaining. At first he tried to persuade her to give up her intention, but she remained stubborn; a short time later she discoverd exactly how persuasive (and ruthless) her lord could be if pushed.
From then until the Crisis Xylene, called Vine, maintained the main garden within the Tower which the Mraal use as a worship area. She was rescussitated by Dove during the Crisis, had a VERY noisy breakup / confrontation with Kesik, and lifemated to Sharai. The two lived in New Hope for a number of years before deciding that "life in the Outdoors sucks sea eggs" and moving back to the Tower.
One to "open her own doors, put on her own coat, fight her own battles, pull out her own chair, hail her taxi and light her cigarette" (to paraphrase Linda Goodman). No fragile wallflower, she.  Rapid reactions.  Takes the lead, first to move to action, did her own propositioning...et cetera. This assertive/aggressiveness was part of what led to her Recognition to Kesik. She'd developed a crush on him, ("he's kinda cute in a dorky sort of way"), and set her cap for him -- his response was to run like hell. She finally cornered him long enough to demand what he was so afraid of, and it was during that argument that they Recognized.
A crusader, optimistic, faithful to her dreams. Has a rich inner life as well as a gregarious outgoing personality.   Compassionate, communicative, deeply caring about the affairs and feelings of others. Could also be obstinate as a mule. Strongly emotional with a volatile temper. A loyal, trustworthy friend who demanded (and generally got) loyalty and trustworthiness in return.
